Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat continue to report high Daily New Cases

Over 6.1 cr vaccine doses administered across the country

Six States, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, continue to report a surge in the COVID daily new cases. 78.56% of the new cases are reported from these 6 states.

56,211 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours.                                                                                                    

Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 31,643. It is followed by Punjab with 2,868 while Karnataka reported 2,792 new cases.

 

Ten States, as shown under, are displaying an upward trajectory in daily new cases., 

India’s total Active Caseload has reached 5,40,720 today. India’s present active caseload now stands at 4.47% of India’s total Positive Cases. A net incline of 18,912 cases recorded from the total active caseload in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh cumulatively account for 79.64% of the total active cases in the country. Maharashtra leads with more than 62% of the active caseload of the country. 

On the other hand, more than 6.11 cr (6,11,13,354) vaccine doses have been administered through 10,07,091 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am today. These include 81,74,916 HCWs (1st dose), 51,88,747 HCWs (2nd dose), 89,44,742 FLWs (1^st dose) and 37,11,221 FLWs (2^nd Dose), 68,72,483 (1^st Dose) and 405 (2nd dose) beneficiaries aged more than 45 years with specific co-morbidities and 2,82,19,257 (1^st Dose) and 1583 (2nd dose) beneficiaries aged more than 60 years.

As on Day-73 of the vaccination drive (29^th March, 2021), total 5,82,919 vaccine doses were given. Out of which, 5,51,164 beneficiaries were vaccinated across 14,608 sessions for 1^st dose and 31,755 beneficiaries received 2^nd dose of vaccine.

COVID19 Vaccination-Day 74

More than 6.24 Cr COVID19 vaccine doses administered

12.94 lakh vaccine doses given till 7 pm today

The cumulative number of COVID19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 6.24 Crore today.

A total of 6,24,08,333 vaccine doses have been given, as per the provisional report till 7 pm today.

These include 82,00,007 HCWs who have taken the 1st dose and 52,07,368 HCWs who have taken the 2nd dose, 90,08,905 FLWs (1^st dose), 37,70,603 FLWs (2^nd dose), 2,90,20,989 1^st dose beneficiaries and 36,899 2^nd dose beneficiaries more than 60 years old and 71,58,657 (1^st dose) and 4,905 (2^nd dose) beneficiaries aged 45 and above with specific co-morbidities.

Total 12,94,979 vaccine doses were given till 7 pm today, the Seventy fourth day of nationwide COVID19 vaccination. Out of which 11,77,160 beneficiaries were vaccinated for 1st dose and 1,17,819 beneficiaries received 2nd dose of vaccine as per the provisional report. Final reports would be completed for the day by late tonight.

Dr Harsh Vardhan addresses Hope Consortium’s ‘World Immunisation and Logistics Summit’

Highlights India’s committed and strategic Public Health Response and Management Decisions

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare digitally participated in a panel discussion on vaccine production and distribution across Asia at the “World Immunisation and Logistics Summit”, today.

The virtual conference brought together over 1,000 attendees from around the region and the world in active discussion around tackling key issues facing global supply chains as the world faces the largest and most complex logistical operation in history in an effort to deliver life-saving vaccines worldwide.

The panel was excited to know how India is scaling up production of COVID-19 vaccines and how the government was working with local and international partners to ensure the timely distribution of these vaccines.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan showcased India’s vaccine administration program; the development of two vaccines in our country- Covishield and Covaxin; the priority pyramid of beneficiaries that targets those above 60 and above 45 with co-morbidities with focus on the recent decision to allow all citizens above 45 and above years for vaccination from 1^st April, 2021.

Reminding everyone that India produces 60% of the world’s vaccine, he also detailed how infrastructure for India’s universal immunization programme provided a pivot for the COVID vaccine drive. On the dichotomy of helping, one’s countrymen or serving the entire humanity, he said, “More than 61 million vaccine doses have been already administered in our country. We always feel that benefits of the science be delivered to the whole world. 64 million doses have been given to 84 countries under various programs.”

Development of vaccine was actively and proactively supported by the government; the expert group for vaccine NEGVAC was formed 6 months before their launch which planned each detail of the vaccine, its manufacturing, logistics and administration. Half a dozen of vaccines are under clinical trial and around one dozen vaccines are in pre-clinical trial which are being monitored by the body, Dr Harsh Vardhan stated. The Union Minister also informed that there is significant amount of fund allocated for the research and development of vaccine.

Dr Harsh Vardhan addressed a question on the global powers coming together to operate and supply vaccines worldwide in the current situation. Applauding initiatives for collaboration including the HOPE consortium as a welcome step, Dr. Harsh Vardhan observed, “It is going to help in shaping the future policy for equitable distribution of vaccine. This will strengthen the efforts of WHO in their commitment to ensuring that there is a common platform in validation, all manufacturing companies of the whole world are on the same page and all stakeholders are committed to equitable distribution of vaccine. We have learnt from each other’s experiences, and from various guidelines. There is a great need for this exercise to be scaled up. We need to introspect and review till the time everyone on this platform gets vaccinated.” He reminded them of the phrase, ‘No one is safe until everyone is safe.’

Recollecting the biggest challenges faced by him in terms of rolling out the vaccination programme, the Minister said, “India itself with a huge population of 1.35 billion and huge diversity is a big challenge. We took this challenge head on under the leadership of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. On 17th of January last year, we had issued an advisory regarding COVID long before it snowballed into the crisis it is today. We also developed capacities for testing, ventilators, tracking, surveillance, quarantine centre and emphasized that COVID Appropriate Behaviour is the most potent vaccine against COVID.” After the launch of the vaccines, we prioritized our health care workers, front line workers, the general population aged 45 and above with co-morbidities and those above 60 years of age; and now all those above 45 years. We also planned the opening of 50,000 centres across the country and trained 7 lakh vaccinators for the exercise, he added.

The Union Health Minister concluded the discussion lauding the need for public-private alliances like the Hope Consortium which was founded to provide supply chain solutions to support the safe and efficient distribution of COVID vaccines.

The global panel discussion was moderated by popular news anchor Laura Buckwell, the panel had Madhav Kurup, Regional CEO MESA, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and Dr. Pascal Rey-Herme, Co-Founder and Group Medical Director, International SOS as co-panelists.

Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare released the document titled- “Chasing the Virus: A Public Health Response to the COVID 19 Pandemic” here today.

This publication is a chronicle of the response to the pandemic for the period January 2020 to November 2020.

The Union Health Minister expressed immense pleasure on the release of comprehensive response of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. He said, “This is a historical moment for all of us. On 30^th January, we had our first case and today after 1 year and 2 months, we have chased more than 1.2 croreCOVID19 cases. But these are the cases that we have chased. There may be many other cases which may not be in our record. But the matter of happiness is that out of the 1.2 Cr cases, 1.13 Cr pople have recovered.”

He further highlighted as to how this unprecedented pandemic of global magnitude was converted into an exceptional opportunity. He said, “The hindrances that were faced in the initial days of pandemic were resolved.We used to import PPE kits initially.Now, we not only manufacture sufficient kits for India but we are exporting them to other countries. The labs which started from just 1 in January 2020 have now expanded to 2433 across the country. We are also exporting vaccines to many countries.”“The biggest lesson from our fight against the pandemic is that it gave us a major boost in confidence. The country can fight any adverse situation and challenges coming our way. We have fared better than many countries”, he added.

The Union Health Minister noted the need to publish this chronicle of the response to the pandemic. At the launch, he said, “The document “Chasing the Virus: A Public Health Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic” is a factual narrative of the health systems response across the nation to this unprecedented health emergency. Volume-1 of this document, captures the various facets of the response spanning pandemic related actions as well as enabling health systems to provide uninterrupted access to non-COVID essential health services.We all know that we have fought this battle with contribution of every stakeholder. It will be difficult to document the efforts put in by all the people in fighting our battle against the pandemic.”

Noting on how the success on the front of COVID19 can be replicated in our fight against Tuberculosis, the Union health Minister said, “Another goal in front of us is to eliminate the Tuberculosisby 2025. Our efforts of testing, tracing and treating in COVID19 can be replicated for treatment of Tuberculosis. The experience from the pandemic can be used to achieve the goal of eliminating TB by 2025.”

At the end of the event, Dr Harsh Vardhan extended his good wishes to all those who have been phenomenal and instrumental in the fight against pandemic. He also expressed his hope that this document will go a long way in strengthening the healthcare system, in helping stakeholders to refine their strategies of dealing with pandemics & equip the health systems for the present & future health emergencies.

“We are yet to feel the slightest discomfort since our 1st dose”

None of us are safe until everybody is safe: Dr. Harsh Vardhan appeals for following of CAB and vaccination of every eligible family member

Dr Harsh Vardhan,Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare along with his wife Smt. Nutan Goel were administeredthe second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) today at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute, New Delhi.They had taken the first dose of the vaccine 28 days before on 2^nd March 2021. 

Appealing every eligible person to get vaccinated,especially in light of the recent decision to extend vaccination to everyone aged above 45 years of age, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, “We are yet to feel the slightest discomfort since our 1^st dose.”He also took the occasion to detail the provisions for AEFI (Adverse Events Following Immunization) monitoring incorporated in the protocol and the abysmally low proportion of beneficiaries reporting AEFI. He re-iterated, “all vaccines are absolutely safe, immunogenic and effective.” He addressed the concerns of reporters on individuals reporting Corona infection post their vaccination: “These cases are extremely rare. Antibodies take two weeks to be fully developed after the second dose of the vaccine which provides a window for infection. This takes us to our earlier appeal of strict adherence to COVID Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) regardless of the vaccination exercise.” He added that COVID infection in those who are vaccinated would be very mild and would not progress to an advanced stage. Squashing various vaccine relatedrumours being circulated on social mediawhich he termed a nuisance to society, he strongly made the case to trust Science over Whatsapp forwards.

Assuring everyone on the Union Government’s vigilance of the second surge of COVID cases being reported across the country, Dr. Harsh Vardhan observed, “This situation is a grim reflection of the callous attitude of people in following COVID Appropriate Behaviour. Following these norms along with participation in vaccination are the key pillars in our Jan Andolan against COVID.” He said that essentials in controlling the disease trajectory like the ‘Test, Track & Treat’ strategy are now well known along with clinical procedures to treat patients of severe COVID. He also spoke on the highest level of engagement in monitoring the COVID situation referring to the Prime Minister’s VC with Chief Ministers of States and the frequent VCs conducted by Union Health Secretary with his colleagues in States and UTs. He reminded everyone that fatality rate stands at just 1.34% while India’s recovery rate is the highest in the world. He also mentioned that for the 46 districts reporting cases, around 400 districts have been free of COVID (187 districts with no fresh cases in 7 days, 84 districts in 14 days, 20 districts in 21 days, 139 districts in 28 days). 

The Minister also informed that India has sent over 6 crore vaccine doses to 84 nations across the globe while seven more vaccines are in the pipeline undergoing their clinical trials. He stressedthat the principle ‘none of us are safe until everybody is safe’ which is at the heart of the Vaccine Maitri programmeis also applicable in vaccinating one’s near and dear ones. He ended with pointing out that 7 lakh trained vaccinators, seamless registration in CoWIN portal for over 10 lakh vaccination sessions, the government and private facilities administering the vaccines are on the path to make the vaccination drive a success.
