The Case Fatality Rate in the country
continues to register a steady downfall. It has dropped to 2.46% today. India
has one of the lowest Case Fatality Rates in the world. Effective clinical
management of the moderate and severe cases through a well executed Standard of
Care protocol has ensured high rate of recovery among the COVID patients. The
Centre is handholding and supporting the State/UT governments in collectively
combating COVID-19. One such initiative is e-ICU program of AIIMS, New Delhi.
Aimed at reducing mortality, AIIMS has mentored and supported 43 big
hospitals in 11 States through shared experiences and technical advice from
domain experts in clinical management of ICU patients. This has substantially
boosted their capacity in treatment of critical care patients.
More than 7 lakh persons have been
cured of COVID-19 and discharged till now. This has further expanded the
difference between those who are active COVID patients and the recovered persons
(7,00,086) by 3,09,627. 22,664 COVID patients have recovered from COVID-19 in
the last 24 hours. The recovery rate as of now is at 62.62%.
Medical attention is being provided to
all the 3,90,459 active cases, in hospitals and home isolation.

AIIMS New Delhi’s “e-ICU” Video Consultation Program
Gains Traction

In order to strengthen the Government of India’s efforts
to reduce COVID-19 mortality, AIIMS New Delhi has started a video-consultation
program with ICU doctors across the country called e-ICU on 8th July, 2020. The program aims at holding
case-management discussions among doctors who are at the frontline in treating
COVID-19 patients in hospitals and COVID facilities around the country.
Physicians who manage COVID-19 patients including those in the ICUs can raise
queries, present their experience and share knowledge with other physicians and
experts from AIIMS, New Delhi on this video platform.
The primary objective of these discussions is to reduce
mortality from COVID-19 by learning from shared experience and strengthening
best practices among hospitals with 1000 beds including isolation beds, oxygen
supported and ICU beds. Four sessions have been held till date covering 43
institutions {Mumbai (10), Goa (3), Delhi (3), Gujarat (3), Telangana (2),
Assam (5), Karnataka (1), Bihar (1), Andhra Pradesh (1), Kerala (1), Tamil Nadu
(13)}.
Each of these sessions conducted through Video
Conference span over 1.5 to 2 hours. The discussions have covered the entire
range of issues related to management of COVID-19 patients. Some of the
important issues that have been stressed upon are the need for rational use of
‘Investigational Therapies’ like Remdesevir, convalescent plasma and
Tocilizumab. The treating teams have discussed the current indications and possible
harm due to their indiscriminate use and the need to limit social-media
pressure based prescriptions.
The use of proning, high flow oxygen, non-invasive
ventilation and ventilator settings for advanced disease have also been a
common discussion point. The role of various testing strategies in diagnosing
COVID-19 has also been an important topic of shared learning.
Issues such as the need for repeat testing, admission
and discharge criteria, management of post discharge symptoms, and return to
work have been addressed.
Some of the other common concerns have been the methods
of communication with patients, screening of health-care workers, managing
new-onset diabetes, uncommon presentations such as stroke, diarrhoea and
myocardial infarction etc. The team from AIIMS, New Delhi was able to act as a
bridge for new knowledge from one group to the other at each VC, apart from
advising from its own experience and the extensive literature reviews done by
the domain experts.
The “e-ICU’ video consultation program in the coming
weeks would cover ICU doctors from smaller healthcare facilities (i.e. those
having 500 beds or more) across the country.

Fight against COVID can only be won with the cooperation of Each and Everyone in the country: Dr. Harsh Vardhan

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union
Minister of Health and Family Welfare launched Punjab National Bank’s (PNB)
campaign to distribute face masks and sanitizers to prevent the spread of
COVID-19, here today. Shri S.S. Mallikarjuna Rao, MD and CEO, and other
senior officials of PNB were also present. PNB’s 22 zonal offices across the
nation also participated through video conferencing.
Lauding PNB’s contribution to
the national cause, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, “Punjab National Bank, India’s
first Swadeshi Bank, was established in the spirit of nationalism and inspired
by freedom fighters like Lala Lajpat Rai. It was the first bank purely managed
by Indians with Indian capital. During the pre-independence period, the bank
had the honour of having account of Jallianwala Bagh Committee which was
subsequently operated by Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”
Expressing his gratitude to PNB
for taking this responsibility when the whole world is suffering from COVID19,
he commented, “I am happy that PNB is supporting the efforts of the Government
in fight against this Pandemic. Steps like donation in PM Cares fund and
organising CSR activities for distribution of masks and sanitizers have been
taken by the Bank. Use of masks and good hand hygiene promote COVID appropriate
behaviour and this is the best ‘social vaccine’ we currently have
against the disease. The Bank is distributing such material in 662 districts
throughout the country and I congratulate PNB for their efforts.”
Recollecting the collective
fight against COVID under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra
Modi, he commented, “Right after China informed about the virus to the world
community, the first meeting of the Committee of Experts was held within 24
hours in the Health Ministry. The country has substantially progressed from
just one lab equipped to test for the novel virus in National Institute of
Virology, Pune in January 2020 to about 1268 labs, as of now. Earlier years,
all samples of respiratory viruses had to be sent to USA for testing.” He also
added that the country will have the capacity to test one million people within
the next 10 to 12 weeks.
Elaborating on the increased
domestic capacity to manufacture masks, PPEs etc., Dr Harsh Vardhan stated: “We
imported PPEs, N95 masks and ventilators earlier. However, with the initiatives
taken by the Government, our entrepreneurs have been successful in turning the
situation around and matching the internal demand of these items.”
Dr. Harsh Vardhan also expressed
his confidence that the country will tide over the crisis, “We have effectively
handled many diseases in the country. We have eradicated Poliomyelitis and
Smallpox, addressed the challenge of AIDS, Nipah virus, Swine Flu and Zika. We
have been able to prevent Ebola from entering the country. I am confident that
with the collective efforts of all, we shall be able to meet this challenge
too”. He added that India has one of the lowest Case Fatality Rate in the
world. It is 2.46% today due to the effective clinical management protocols of
the government, he added.
Shri S.S. Mallikarjuna Rao, CEO,
PNB stated that after the nation wide appeal of the Prime Minister, they have
collaborated with different stakeholders such as Public Sector Enterprises
(PSEs), Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) etc., to contribute
to strengthening of the economy. They have also contributed to implementation
of Prime Minister’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan by bringing a large section of
the population under the Jan Dhan Yojana and through Direct Benefit Transfer.
The senior officials of PNB
presented the Health Minister a COVID kit of masks and sanitizers, a book
on the glorious history of the bank and other memorabilia.
